Collection: Decoders

Which Decoder Do I Need?

Use the quick-selector below to match the right decoder to your locomotive. All claims are based on manufacturer (ESU) published specifications — always verify your loco's PCB before ordering.

🔌 Step 1 — Identify Your Connector

Check your locomotive's circuit board or manual for one of these connector types:

  • 21MTC (NEM660) — 21-pin interface, common on modern European HO/OO locos. No loose wires needed.
  • NEM652 (8-pin) — 8-pin plug, widely used on HO European and Australian outline models.
  • 6-pin (NEM651) — Smaller 6-pin plug, common on N scale and some older HO models.
  • Direct / Hardwire — No socket; requires soldering directly to motor/lighting pads.
  • No socket (DCC-ready PCB) — Board has pads but no plug; check if an adapter board is available for your loco.

⚠️ Using an incompatible connector without an adapter can damage your decoder and loco. If unsure, ask us before ordering.

🔊 Step 2 — Sound or No Sound?

Feature LokSound (Sound Decoder) LokPilot (Motion Decoder)
Sound capability ✅ Yes — built-in speaker output, steam/diesel/electric sounds ❌ No — motor & lighting control only
Pre-loaded sound project Most variants come blank (see Step 3); some are prototype-specific N/A
Motor control ✅ Full DCC motor control ✅ Full DCC motor control
Function outputs (F-outputs) Up to 10+ (varies by model) Up to 6–10 (varies by model)
Extra light/aux outputs ✅ Yes — AUX outputs for additional lighting effects ✅ Yes — AUX outputs available on most variants
Typical use Sound-equipped models; adding sound to silent locos Budget builds; locos where sound isn't needed

💾 Step 3 — Blank vs. Ready-to-Program

Type What it means Who it suits
Blank (empty project) No sound file loaded. Requires ESU LokProgrammer or compatible DCC system to upload a sound project purchased separately. Experienced modellers who want a custom prototype sound
Sound download included A sound project voucher or pre-loaded file for a specific prototype is included — ready to run after programming. Modellers who want a quicker setup matched to their loco
Note ESU sound projects are purchased/downloaded separately via the ESU Sound Download Portal. Australian locomotive sounds (e.g. 48 class, 81 class, XPT) are available there.

🚂 Step 4 — Scale & Australian Prototype Fit

Scale Common connector Recommended family Adapter needed?
HO / OO (1:87 / 1:76) 21MTC or NEM652 (8-pin) LokSound 5 / LokPilot 5 Only if loco has no socket — check PCB first
N (1:160) 6-pin NEM651 or Next18 LokSound 5 micro / LokPilot 5 micro Often yes — confirm your loco's socket type
O (1:48) Usually hardwire LokSound 5 XL Typically requires direct wiring
Australian outline HO Varies by manufacturer — check your loco's manual LokSound 5 21MTC or NEM652 Some Auscision/Trainorama/SDS models use 21MTC; others use NEM652 — verify before ordering

🔌 When Do I Need an Adapter?

  • Your loco has a 21MTC socket but you have a NEM652 decoder → use a 21MTC-to-8pin adapter board.
  • Your loco has no socket at all → use a keep-alive + direct-wire harness, or a brand-specific adapter PCB if available.
  • Your loco uses a non-standard PCB (e.g. specific Australian outline models) → contact us before ordering so we can confirm compatibility.

⚠️ Compatibility information is provided as general guidance based on manufacturer specifications. Always verify your specific locomotive's board type before purchasing. Euro Hobby Trains does not guarantee fit for every model variant.
